Fir glade
Date: 12/21/2005
The glade of the fir forest of Valaam is covered with moss and lichen. The fir forset is rather dense so coming out of it's dusk onto the glade bursting with sunlight is very enjoyable experience. The young firs feel theirself comfortable here with lots of space for them to grow.
St. Nicholas Skete at sunset
Date: 12/22/2005
St. Nicholas Skete cell at sunset. The access to the Skete is restricted. Only the piligrims coming to the holy land are allowed to pass after the blessing from the prior. Still anyone can watch the endless white nights sunset. The colors of drooping sun do not fade completely and are visible well after the midnight.
St. Nicholas Skete
Date: 12/22/2005
This panorama of St. Nicholas Skete shows the very small isle connected to main isle of Vallam archipelago with a small bridge. The wind blowing several minutes ago settled down allowing long exposures.
Steep lakeside
Date: 12/22/2005
The Steep shore of Valaam island. The gusts of wind made shooting this panorama rather tough. I had to keep the shutter fast to avoid blurry grass and trees. The only choice was to boost the ISO to 800 to amplify the reduced amount of light that passed through polarizer. Small amount of noise is still left in the shadows even after noise suppression.
Young fir at sunset
Date: 12/22/2005
Among several grown-up trees near the very waterline the young fir tree logically became a quite attractive subject. The trees here in Valaam grow through the stone in spite of the harsh northern weather.
The tree in the water
